This walk is a good choice if you'd rather discover the city through its cafés and eateries. The route takes you past some of the very best coffee and lunch spots in the city centre. A pleasant walk, a tasty lunch and a cup of coffee.
The walk starts at the Westerhaven. One of the cafés you’ll pass is Wadapartja, a quirky spot where you can enjoy local dishes and drinks. Everything in the restaurant is for sale, too. You’ll also walk past Blue Bananas Pancakes Café, which serves fluffy pancakes. Kattencafé Op z’n Kop is on the route as well: a cosy place for a cup of coffee while you give some attention to the shelter cats. Along the way you’ll also pass The Donut Company, The Smooth Brothers, Your Daily Teacup, De Drie Gezusters and Pigalle, among others. While you walk, you can stop for a bite and a drink at a café of your choice, or at several of them if you’re a true enthusiast.
Starting point: Westerhaven.
Walk to the Westerkade and cross the Museumbrug. Then continue straight ahead past the Academie Minerva. Turn right onto the Ganzevoortsingel.
Turn left onto the Zuiderkuipen. At the end of this street, turn right onto the Reitemakersrijge. Then take a short turn to the right.
You’ll come out on the Gedempte Zuiderdiep. First cross to the other side of the road. Follow this path all the way to the end, until you reach the Herestraat.
On the way you’ll pass Your Daily Tea Cup, Grand Café Groningen and Wadapartja (on the other side of the street).
Keep walking along the Herestraat until you reach Bakker Bart. Turn right here, along the Grote Markt. This is where you’ll find De Drie Gezusters.
Continue to the Naberstraat, where you’ll find Blue Bananas Pancakes Café.
Carry on to the left along the Popkenstraat. This brings you out at the Martinikerkhof. Go right for a short stretch and walk around the church. You’ll then end up back on the Grote Markt.
Turn right, then take the first path you see on the left, across the Kwinkenplein. Then turn right onto the Oude Ebbingestraat. As you walk along this street, you’ll pass Coffeecompany, Kattencafé Op z’n Kop and Chocolate Company Café.
At the end of this street, cross the Ebbingebrug to the Nieuwe Ebbingestraat. On the corner of this street you’ll find Elmers Koffie Lunch en Meer.
Here you continue to the left along the Noorderkerkstraat. Walk past (or through) the Nieuwe Kerk. At the Nieuwe Boteringestraat, turn left. You’ll pass the Ossenmarkt.
Cross the Boteringebrug and turn right straight away onto the Lopende Diep. Follow this path all the way along until you see another bridge.
Here you turn left onto the Oude Kijk in ’t Jatstraat. You’ll walk past Lust, Grand Café De Oude Kijk and The Donut Company.
(Optional) You can also walk down the Zwanestraat, which is on the left at the end of the Oude Kijk in ’t Jatstraat. This is where you’ll find Smooth Brothers and Bagels & Beans.
Then continue along the Akerkstraat. This ends at the Akerkhof, where you turn right and walk along the Brugstraat. Doppio is on this street.
Next, cross the Abrug and continue along the Astraat.
Turn left towards the Westerkade and then on to the Westerhaven: this is the end point.
