A nice walking route just outside the centre of Groningen. The walk starts at the Hoofdstation (main railway station) and heads through the Oosterpoort neighbourhood to the modern Europapark, then on through the beautiful Sterrebos.
A nice walking route for anyone who wants to explore beyond the centre. Walk past the small old houses of the Oosterpoort neighbourhood, then follow interesting little streets to the modern Europapark and the Helperpark, and finish with a bit of calm in the Sterrebos.
Starting point: Stationsplein.
Walk straight ahead and then turn right immediately onto the Stationsweg. Follow this road until you see the Herebrug. Here you turn right onto the Hereweg.
Cross over to Parklaan and follow this path until you see the first entrance on your right.
Then take the path on the left straight away, along the Brandenburgerstraat. Continue to the path on the left, the Sophiastraat.
Follow this path all the way to the end. Here you turn right onto the Oosterweg. Turn left almost immediately onto the Warmoesstraat and follow it as far as the Meeuwerderweg. Turn right here.
Then, near the bus station, bear left and turn right into the Van Sijsenstraat.
Take the second turning on the left, onto the Verlengde Fredrikstraat. At the square, turn right and you will come out on the Verlengde Nieuwstraat. Follow this path all the way to the end.
Turn left and, after the bridge over the Winschoterdiep, go right and pass under the viaduct. Cross the Winschoterdiep and keep following this path.
Next you cross the Winschoterdiep again, and here you turn left onto the Verlengde Winschoterdiep. Keep following this path.
If you keep walking along the water, you will come to a bridge. Cross it, then turn left onto the next bridge.
Continue to the Eelkemastraat and turn right. You will walk past the Europapark.
You will come out at the FC Groningen stadium. Turn left along the Boumaboulevard and walk under the Alfa-College.
Walk around the stadium until you reach its southernmost point, then continue to the Gideonweg. Follow this path all the way until you can take the path on the right.
Cross the Oude Stamspoor. Turn right straight away into the Helperpark. At the end of the path, turn left towards Station Europapark.
Walk across the Harm Buiterplein and then under the railway tracks. Turn right immediately and cross over. Keep following this path until you see a petrol station.
Follow the bend, and you will see the DUO building. Walk around the left-hand side of the building as far as the Kempkensberg.
Walk through the Sterrebos, where you will pass the Muziekkoepel (bandstand).
Eventually you will come out on the Hereweg. Follow this road straight ahead until you see the motorway again. Walk underneath it and keep going straight until you can take the first road on the left (alongside the Zuiderbegraafplaats).
This path is called the Fongerspad, so follow it. Then turn right through the Dinkelpark.
When you come out on the Vechtstraat, turn right onto the Merwedestraat. Keep walking straight on to the Davidstraat.
You will come out at a small car park, where you turn left onto the Driehovenstraat.
Cross the Station bridge to the Stationsplein: this is the end point.
