In the Martinikerk, the setting for LUMIA is more than a backdrop: the church is part of the performance. Martijn Adema and Hidde Kross project light and video onto the windows, the pillars, the ceiling and the Schnitger-Hinsz organ, while organist Henk de Vries plays that same organ. Across four parts, you see how the earth comes into being, how life gets going in water and mud, and how humans gradually get a firmer grip on it. The performance doesn’t end with an answer, but with a question.
The music comes from Harmonie ‘67, a concert band from the city with around sixty musicians. They play music that Hendrik de Boer wrote especially for LUMIA, alongside pieces by composers including Hans Zimmer and Samuel Barber. The performance lasts an hour and is part of Wintergoud.
Afterwards, you’ll probably look at those centuries-old windows and that organ with different eyes.
