11 x typical Groningen stores

The Martini Tower, students, vibrant nightlife, pubs that don’t have closing times and an egg ball from the wall are typical Groningen. These are probably the first things that come to mind when you think of Groningen. But Groningen also has stores that are impossible to imagine the city without.

The center is home to numerous stores typical of Groningen. These stores can only be found in Groningen and should definitely not be missed when you are in Groningen.

Food

Groningen is rich in many markets but Le Souk is perhaps the most special. Le Souk, which means market in Arabic, is very popular among Groningers and tourists. The store has a large assortment of North African delicacies and spices. When owner Mohammed Kemmoun came to Groningen in 1982, he added the Arab market to the far north. It is now truly part of Groningen.

Every Groninger knows Droppie. The cheerful window display and colorful awnings stand out immediately. Droppie has been there for the Groningen sweet tooth and tourist since 1972. In the store you can choose from 300 different kinds of candy. Naturally, you would prefer to try them all.

Finding a good wine for dinner can be tricky, but it doesn’t have to be that way. At Barrel wine store you get the right advice. Owner Martijn Fernhout stuck around Groningen after his student days. After founding Wine Barrel, he also started the wine store. You can find the wines of Wine Barrel, books about wine and fun accessories in the wine store.

Unique it certainly is, a store that sells only soup. De Soepwinkel can only be found in Groningen on the Oude Kijk in ‘t Jatstraat. The soup store sells exotic and very Dutch soups. Of course, you can also choose the Groninger mustard soup.

With Dutch and farmhouse cheeses, the Groninger kaasboetiek is quintessentially Groningen. The boutique sells many local products and fun Groningen souvenirs. For a nice nut or salt to go with the cheese, you can go to Tres bien. Tres bien may not sound so Groningen, but it is definitely a beloved store that can only be found in Groningen. The store sells nuts, chocolates, kernels, seeds and more. All products are fresh and of the best quality.

Groningen could hardly be more Groningen. Knols Koek sells traditional Groninger cakes. Ever since 1923 Knols Koek can be found in Groningen. The delicious cakes are still made according to grandpa’s recipe. A nice piece of history.

Department stores

Looking for a book about Groningen? Then you’ve come to the right place at Boekenhandel Godert Walter. The small but fine bookstore sells Dutch, French, English and German literature and much more. For more than 75 years you can visit this Groningen bookstore.

Groningen not only has multicultural residents, but also stores. For example, Batsu. Batsu brings a little piece of Japan to Groningen. With Japanese workshops and delicious teas, Batsu is unique. The small but fine store is located almost next to the Hoge- and Lage der Aa, making it one of the most beautiful spots in Groningen.

In Groningen’s liveliest shopping street sits jewelry store Fris. Fris is not just any jewelry store. At Fris you buy beads, threads, charms and clasps. To design your own Groningen jewelry. Sisters Claudia and Daniëlle ensure that new sections can be found every week.

Game here, game there. At Wirwar you really get confused. The store sells allee games, making it unique in Groningen. A cozy little store where you can find your next favorite game. Another cozy store is the Kadocafe. At the Kadocafe you will find the perfect gift for everyone. In addition to gifts, you will find the largest tea cabinet in the Netherlands.
