There are plenty of restaurants in the centre of Groningen, but you’ll also find a wide variety of restaurants outside the city centre. For those who fancy a bit of a trip out and want to explore Groningen’s various neighbourhoods, we’ve put together a list of some of the best restaurants outside the city centre.
In the Oosterpark neighbourhood, you’ll find the city restaurant Het Oude Politie Bureau. As the name suggests, the restaurant is housed in a former police station. The owners opened the restaurant right in the heart of the residential neighbourhood.
The menu features a range of local produce, and sustainability is a key priority at this restaurant. Vegetarians are also well catered for here, with a variety of vegetarian and vegan options available. When you visit this restaurant, be sure to read the stories from local residents featured on the menu – you’ll soon feel right at home in the neighbourhood.

Tucked away in the Korrewegwijk neighbourhood is Salmagundi’s. At Salmagundi’s, you can enjoy international cuisine every Friday evening. The chefs are mainly from the Middle East and are gaining valuable work experience at the restaurant as part of their integration into Dutch society.
The dishes are mainly homemade and organic. For the dish of the day, you can choose between meat or vegetarian options.

At Bistro de Grote Frederik, you can dine in a French atmosphere. Owners Marjon and Arnejan developed a passion for hospitality and cooking from a young age. Chef Arnejan has gained extensive experience in French cuisine and is delighted to share this with you through his refined dishes.
Hostess Marjon’s love for Groningen and wine come together in the bistro. She’ll be happy to advise you on all the fine wines. You’ll find the Bistro in the Oosterpoort neighbourhood, right in the heart of the district. The friendly and cosy atmosphere means you’ll soon feel at home at the Grote Frederik.

Local produce is also at the heart of the Uit De Buurt restaurant. Local produce and staff give the Uit De Buurt restaurant its charm. Uit De Buurt sources from small suppliers and uses wholesome produce, transforming it into delicious dishes. As the restaurant relies on the availability of local produce, the menu changes every week, and that is what makes this restaurant so unique.
At Bistro Basta, as they say themselves, you can enjoy simply good food and drink. The restaurant is situated on Verlengde Hereweg. The dishes are creatively presented and look appetising. The owners, Bas and Eva, try to use regional produce as much as possible.

Dinercafé De Markies is located on the edge of the Noorderplantsoen. You are welcome here for a small snack or drink, but also for a more elaborate multi-course dinner with matching wine.
The Italian restaurant Il Lago is a little further down the road, but well worth a visit. This family-run restaurant has been based on the Hoorsemeer since 1994. The dishes are prepared using fresh ingredients and a love of Italian cuisine. The Camera family hails from beautiful Rome. At the restaurant, the Il Lago team works with warmth and passion. They’ll be happy to advise you on the various wines and beers.
