About Groningen Central Station

Groningen Central Station is the main station in the city of Groningen. It is located on the south side of the city center, across from the Groninger Museum. In 2019, the Dutch Railways (NS) named Groningen Central Station the most beautiful station in the Netherlands. But the station also has a rich history and has served as a major departure and arrival point for the city for over a hundred years.

Current station information

What began as a station that was too small and uncomfortable grew into one of the most beautiful station buildings in the Netherlands. When the chairman of the Groningen Chamber of Commerce complained in 1889 about the crowds, the lack of comfort, and the poor hygiene at the old station, he put the construction of a new facility on the agenda. It was completed in 1896: an imposing design by architect Izaak Gosschalk, blending Neo-Gothic and Neo-Renaissance styles. More than a century later, the station remains an icon of Groningen. Thanks to a thorough restoration, the richly decorated station hall once again shines as it was intended. It is a place where history and travel meet.

The Renovated Main Station

It surely hasn’t escaped travelers’ notice that a lot has changed in recent years; passenger numbers are rising, and as a result, the outdated station facilities were no longer adequate. The goal of the renovations was to ensure that travelers can reach their destinations even more comfortably, quickly, and easily in the future.
