One Saturday a year, De Oosterpoort feels like a little slice of America. TakeRoot has been running since 1998 and calls itself the festival for “past, present and upcoming American music”. You’ll hear country, folk, blues and indie, spread across several halls. This year’s line-up includes American Aquarium, The Del Fuegos, Lance Roark and Jade Bird. You wander from a hall with a seasoned band to a singer-songwriter you’ve never heard of, and it’s often that last one who stays with you the longest.
The name literally means to put down roots, and that’s exactly what the festival has done. It started in Assen and later moved to De Oosterpoort, which is still its home. The food fits the theme too, because the cooks from SPOT turn it into an American party. Do bring your bank card, as you can’t pay with cash.
Come for a name you know and go home with a new favourite.
