The Akerk is no stranger to the whisky world. The Whisky Festival Noord-Nederland was held here for years, and now whisky is returning to the medieval church with the first edition of Whisky Festival Groningen. It’s organised by Slijterij Frans Muthert and Dramtime.nl. Between the pillars you’ll find more than thirty exhibitors with over 2,000 whiskies between them, plus rum, cognac and bottles from independent bottlers. Big names like Diageo and GlenDronach stand alongside smaller brands such as Sakurao from Japan and Clonakilty from Ireland.
You can wander past the stands at your own pace and chat with importers and brand ambassadors, including Pramod Kashyap of India’s Amrut. Want to know more? Join a tasting in the church’s sacristy. There’s room for a maximum of 25 people, so there’s plenty of space for questions. You choose whether to come in the afternoon or the evening, and there’s food too.
Raising a glass in a church more than seven hundred years old isn’t something you do every weekend.
