Discover Groningen from a different perspective with the many boat tours through the city. A canal cruise along Groningen’s diepen (canals) shows you the city in a truly enjoyable way. You’ll see things you would never notice from the street while soaking up the unique atmosphere of the city.

City Tours

For a boat tour through the city, you can visit Rondvaartbedrijf Kool. The cruise starts opposite the central station and takes you past the highlights of Groningen during a one-hour tour. Enjoy a variety of drinks and snacks on board while learning about the city’s history through the audio guide.

Boot Groningen is also delighted to take you on a tour to show you the city’s most beautiful spots. You can hire a private open-top boat with a skipper and play your own favourite tunes on the boat’s speakers. You can also book a snack platter, pizza or cheese platter to enjoy on board. Whether you’re planning a stag or hen party, a birthday celebration or a company outing, this party boat is always a great idea.

The tour boat Rinus is perfect for a fun group outing for up to 32 people. The boat is equipped with a bar and sound system, and even offers the option to enjoy drinks and bites, lunch, or a BBQ on board. Everything you need to make your staff party, team outing, family day, or bachelor/bachelorette party a success!

Another option is to hire a boat from Borrelvloot. They certainly don’t shy away from serving drinks or snacks on board. For example, you can order a platter of snacks or take a trip on their BBQ boat. They also have plenty to offer in terms of their packages. These include a historical boat tour, a pub quiz, a cocktail workshop, a wine tour or a beer tasting on the water.

Floating Terrace

Terrasje Speciaal offers you the chance to discover Groningen from a floating terrace. Cruise through the city’s canals while enjoying drinks and bites in a relaxed, terrace-like atmosphere. There’s no guide listing historical dates, just music and plenty of fun. The boat also has a convertible roof, so if it starts to rain, you’ll still be sitting comfortably dry.

Sailing on Your Own

Prefer to head out on the water yourself? Rent a sloop and cruise across the Paterswoldsemeer. Experience the peace, open space, and beautiful nature that Groningen has to offer from the water. At Meerwold you can rent a luxury electric sloop for the ultimate relaxing experience.

On the other side of the city, you can also hire your own sloop from the boat hire company in Reitdiephaven. With this sloop, you can explore the waters around Groningen. There’s plenty to do at the marina itself, too. The houses along the Reitdiep are a real tourist attraction.

So there are plenty of ways to explore Groningen from the water. Whether you prefer a relaxing boat tour, a terrace vibe, or taking the helm yourself, there’s something for everyone. Curious about more activities in Groningen? Check out our list of activities.
